Volunteer Opportunities

CALM is proud of the community support we receive through volunteers. CALM uses volunteers in areas of individual interest and facility need. CALM volunteers perform daily/ routine chores, which enable staff to complete more complex tasks or projects. CALM volunteers may assist animal keepers, adopt a garden area, assist the maintenance staff, stock the gift shop or educate with the visiting public.

Animal Keeper Assistant:
Animal keeper assistants begin volunteering in the Children's Park caring for and cleaning up after the domestic animals. Working with these animals shows your reliability, responsibility and commitment. Volunteers are able to work their way up to washing animal dishes, cleaning the keeper work areas and preparing animal diets. Minimum time requirement: 2 hours, twice a month; 9am - 11am. Plant Keeper:
Adults or families are invited to adopt a garden area. Your personal care helps keep our gardens aesthetic for the public and maintains the health of the plant community. You will choose an available garden area and be instructed in the plants and needs of that area. Minimum time requirement: 1 –2 hours per month, flexible hours. Minimum age requirement: 10 years old. Gift Store Helper, Office Helper, Special Events or HolidayLights:
Organized, clean and pleasant volunteers may help keep our gift store ready for our visitors to spend their money! No prior merchandise experience is required to help stocking, pricing and cleaning. Minimum time requirement: 2 hours per month; flexible hours. Minimum age requirement: 10 years old. Docent:
The word ''docent''comes from the Latin meaning to teach. Docents are volunteer "teachers" who educate school children and general visitors about California wildlife and their habitats. Completion of the training class is necessary. The training class meets on a weekly basis for 3 months. To see if you are interested in learning and presenting what you learn, schedule a time to come observe some of our educational programs. Minimum time requirement: 4 hours per month for 2 years after training. Minimum age requirement: 18 years old. Maintenance Assistant:
Volunteers assist our grounds, maintenance, and custodial staff in a wide variety of jobs. Planned jobs (construction or general repairs) may need to be put off due to daily emergencies (broken water lines). No skills are required, but a willingness to work hard and be flexible is a must. Minimum age requirement: 16 years old. No minimum hours requirement.To volunteer with our maintenance staff, call Jordan Reed @ 661-872-2256 Ext. 14

Train:
Volunteers assist in running the Children's Central California Railroad 1/4 scale train located in the future exhibit area at CALM. Duties will include operating the train and helping in the conducting duties associated with the railroad. The train will run Saturdays and Sundays, along with special events including HolidayLights @ CALM. Minimum age requirement is 18 years old. A minimum of 3 hours is required. Volunteering is accommodated with 5 - 7 days advance notice.
An adult must accompany a volunteer under 16 years of age.
